Vocabulary learning is central to language acquisition, whether the language is first, second or foreign.
It emphasizes the need for a systematic and principled approach to vocabulary by both the teacher and the learner.
If we are focused on teaching a realistic communication competence, the four skills must be developed in an integrated way.
Integrating the skills allows us to use more variety in the lessons because the range of activities will be ampler.
Spiral Learning aims to strengthen students’ understanding of the basic concepts by revisiting the concepts periodically with different contexts and with increasing sophistication throughout the curriculum. Studies shows that through repetition and gradually increasing difficulty, a student can learn effectively.
It is said that “Learning should work like a game” in a spiral that gets a child interested, gives them challenging activities, gives a reward, and repeats while adding new skills.
Studies also describe other principals of spiral learning such as teamwork, problem solving, and hands on learning.
This approach keeps the students involved with the subject through various topic-based projects and activities.
The idea behind this approach is that this type of directed learning will hold the students’ interest from the start to the end of the lesson.
Topic based approach or Content-Based instruction is a student –centered approach. Its choice of contents should revolve around considerations of students’ current proficiency levels, academic objectives, interests and needs.
